Bread Crumb Mentality
David Theus
Bread Crumb Mentality is the thought process of sweeping up bread crumbs or income streams to make an entire loaf of bread. Working for one employer for the rest of your employable years so that you may receive your gold watch and pension is old news. Today’s workforce is about mobility and the willingness to try new and multiple things at once.
Fuel prices, the onset of the internet, and the infiltration of a multitude of wireless communication devices have created favorable conditions for employees to finally stay at home or perform their task outside and away from the traditional brick and mortar. With this new mobility comes a new heightened sense of flexibility in designing your work schedule.
Since employers are no longer micromanaging today’s workforce on their every move, employees are free to explore a multitude of opportunities to develop multiple income streams. One person – one job mentality is a thing of the past. Tools which allow one to multi-task with the greatest of ease are the future.
My tip is to establish a base camp from which to work from. Picture your self on a trip to a European major city, say London for example. Stay in London as your base camp and take day trips to surrounding cities and points of interest always keeping your base camp available to you when you need a place to come home to. You can do this with your work as well.
Maintain a base camp of your principle employment, but allow yourself to venture out into short term contracting opportunities that fit your interest. It is these extra opportunities that can provide you with excellent second, third, and forth sources of income.
With a little planning and a willingness to work from home while others are watching TV or preparing for bed time, finish that proposal, respond to those emails, and submit your final invoicing for your services rendered. Before you know it, with a little time consistently invested, you will be sweeping the floor for additional bread crumbs that make your extra loaf of bread.
